New York’s Top Feeder Clubs to the Summer Nationals – 2017

New York clubs account for just over 13% of the entrants registered for this year’s USA Fencing National Championships and July Challenge (Summer Nationals) and constitute the second largest contingent from any state. Billed as the world’s largest fencing tournament, the Summer Nationals will be held in Salt Lake City, UT from July 1 – July 10, 2017. About 515 fencers from 27 New York Clubs are registered for almost 1,200 fencer-events at this year’s Summer Nationals. 

The contingent includes a large proportion of the 77 New York fencers ranked in the Top 8 of their respective age/division categories with many poised for one of 78 individual titles at the premier national tournament of the year.

Our preview continues with an analysis of the overall Top 15 Feeder Clubs, followed by the Top 15 Feeder Clubs for each of the weapons, foil, epee and saber. About 43% of the entrants from New York are foil, followed by saber at 29% and epee at 28%.

Overall Top 15 Feeder Clubs

Currently, there are 62 USA Fencing Member clubs in New York. Of the 62 clubs, 27 or 43% are likely to be represented at the Summer Nationals. The top 15 New York Feeder Clubs with the largest number of registrants account for just over 94% of New York club entrants.

 

The Fencers Club, a 2015-2016 recipient of our “Fencing Club of the Year” designation in Senior Women’s Foil, heads the list with 224 entrants, 173 of which are foil followed by epee with 47 entrants and saber with 4 entrants. The club is followed by Manhattan Fencing Center, a 2015-2016 recipient of our “Fencing Club of the Year” in two designations, Junior Men’s Saber and Veteran Women’s Saber with 179 entrants, 125 of which are saber and 54 foil.

In third place is the Fencing Academy of Westchester with 146 entrants, 86 of which are foil, 58 epee, and two saber. The club is also a 2015-2016 recipient of our “Fencing Club of the Year” designation in Junior Women’s Foil. 

A number of leading clubs in New York City attract members that are registered in adjoining Divisions such as New Jersey and Connecticut. One-third of entrants from the Fencers Club are affiliated with the New Jersey Division and 8.5% are registered in other Divisions. Overall, about 18% of entrants from New York clubs are affiliated with Divisions outside of New York state.

Top 15 Foil Feeder Clubs

The number and composition of foil entrants by age/division category for the Top 15 Foil Feeder Clubs varies significantly as illustrated in the accompanying graph.  The Top 5 feeder clubs, Fencers Club. Fencing Academy of  Westchester, 5T Fencers Club, Manhattan Fencing Center and  Brooklyn Bridge Fencing Club account for about 81% of the foil entrants by New York clubs at the Summer Nationals, whereas the Top 10 clubs account for 96% of the state’s foil entrants.

Fencers Club has the largest number of foil entrants at 173, followed by Fencing Academy of Westchester and 5T Fencers Club with 86 and 56 entrants respectively. The largest group of entrants for the Top 5 clubs is Senior Open (Div 1, 1A, 11 & 111) which account for 28.5% of entrants.

 The next largest groups are youth and juniors which account for 21.8% and 17.7% of entrants for the Top 5 feeder clubs.

Top 15 Epee Feeder Clubs

The number and composition of epee entrants by age/division category for the Top 15 Epee Feeder Clubs varies significantly as illustrated in the accompanying graph.  The Top 5 feeder clubs, New York Fencing Academy, Fencing Academy of Westchester, Fencers Club, North Shore Fencers Club and New York Athletic Club account for about 72% of the epee entrants by New York clubs at the Summer Nationals, whereas the Top 10 clubs account for 93% of the state’s epee entrants.

The New York Fencing Academy has the largest number of epee entrants at 75, followed by Fencing Academy of Westchester and Fencers Club with 58 and 47 entrants respectively. The largest group of entrants for the Top 15 clubs is Senior Open (Div1, 1A, 11 & 111) fencers which account for almost 42% of entrants. The next largest groups are youth and juniors which account for 20.6% and 19.9% of entrants for the Top 15 feeder clubs.

Top 14 Saber Feeder Clubs

The number and composition of saber entrants by age/division category for the Top 14 Saber Feeder Clubs varies significantly as illustrated in the accompanying graph.  The Top 5 feeder clubs, Manhattan Fencing Center, Tim Morehouse Fencing Club, Mission Fencing Center, Island Fencing Center and Sheridan Fencing Academy account for about 80% of the saber entrants by New York clubs at the Summer Nationals, whereas the Top 10 clubs account for 96% of the state’s saber entrants.

Manhattan Fencing Center has the largest number of saber entrants at 125, followed by Tim Morehouse Fencing Club and Mission Fencing Center with 66 and 31 entrants respectively. The largest group of entrants for the Top 5 feeder clubs is Senior Open (Div 1, 1A, 11 & 111) fencers which account for 37% of entrants. The next largest groups are youth and juniors which account for 30.3% and 17.3% of entrants for the Top 5 feeder clubs.
