The Performance of Team USA in Designated Cadet Events in Europe 2016-2017

Posted · Add Comment

Trekking to Europe to fence in the prestigious European Fencing Confederation‘s Cadet Circuit amidst AP exams, SAT/ACT tests, and homework has been the ritual for 198 U.S. cadet fencers over the past fencing season (Summer Nationals through Junior Olympics).  In all, 188 cadet fencers took part in 19 Designated Cadet International competitions in nine cities in seven countries, generating 376 fencer-events.

Designated Cadet International competitions are selected by USFA’s Sports Performance Department and the national foil, epee and saber coaches. The Designated  Cadet International competitions are normally considered in the Group II calculations in the Cadet National Team Point Standings and are used in the selection of the teams for the World Championships. USA fencing points are not awarded for results obtained at non-designated competitions.

The location and size of the Designated Cadet International men’s and women’s events in Europe for the past season are listed in the table below. The events ranged in size from a minimum of 137 fencers in Moedling, Austria for women’ s saber (January 2017), to a maximum of 273 fencers in Moedling, Austria, for men’s foil (November 2016), with an average of about 200 fencers per event. Team USA has been represented on average by about 19.8 fencers per event. In all but Men’s Foil, three events in Europe were designated as Cadet International competitions. In the case of Cadet Men’s Foil, it was four.

For those left behind in the U.S. to pick up the tab and marvel at “how well their child performed”, the locations seem to be out of a travel guide for Europe. Rest assured, though, only Budapest made Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations Ranking 2017 at #49. U.S. News Travel ranks the best destinations in Europe in a variety of categories and again, Budapest was the only city ranked. It ranks Budapest #7 in Best Romantic European Getaways, #16 in Best Places to Visit in Europe, #3 Best Winter Vacations in Europe and #1 Best Affordable Destinations in Europe! The other cities hosting cadet tournaments did not get a look in, so if Budapest is on the list of Designated Cadet International competitions in 2017-2018, plan a visit and take in the sites of a fencing tournament while you are there!

The frequency of traveling to Europe to fence in a Designated Cadet event last year is provided in the following table. With four events for Cadet Men’s foil, 44% of the 32 cadet foil fencers participated in only one event and 44% fenced in all four events.  With three women’s foil events, 50% of fencers traveled to fence in all three events. Interestingly, 53% of women’s saber fencers participated in only one event and 36% fenced in two events.  The total number of cadet events entered by members of Team USA does not include Junior World Cups.

Out of 188 fencers who participated in this year’s Designated events, 42 or about 22% finished in the Top 8 and are listed in the table below. It should be remembered that there were four events in Mens’ foil and in all other gender-weapon categories there were three designated events, so it is not an apples-to-apples comparison to compare all the gender-weapon categories.  With this bias in mind, Andrew Machovec, won three gold medals and four top 8 medals in all. He has participated in eight European cadet events over the past couple of seasons, 2015-2016 and 2016-20107. Ryan Griffiths won two gold medals in Men’s Epee for 2016-2017. He has competed in five European events over the past two years.
