USA Fencing recently announced the 2016-17 Regional Recognition Patch Winners for Y10, Y12, and Y14, who had participated in the Regional Youth Circuit (RYC). Winners are listed in the accompanying file at the end of the post. The Regional Recognition Program, which has been operating for several years, is designed to recognize and reward accomplishments at the Regional Tournament level within the six regions outlined below. Fencers who placed in the top three within their region were awarded a regional patch to distinguish their success for this 2016-2017 season.

Almost 350 patches were awarded to 304 individual fencers from 105 USA Fencing clubs during 2016-2017.  One fencer accumulated five patches in three weapons and another was awarded three patches in different age groups in the same weapon. About 16% of clubs had members who received patches during the year but this ranged from a high of 30% in Region 1, to a low of 11.3% in Region 2 as illustrated in the following table.

The Regional Recognition Program was designed to keep athletes, not ready or able to compete nationally, engaged in fencing at a competitive level. This helps clubs retain membership as fencers with different experience, time allocations, and financial ability are able to take lessons and classes.

Only athletes from a specific Region earn Regional Points.  This encourages participation and assists coaches in establishing developmentally appropriate goals for individual athletes…. Regional Recognition Patches to top performers.  These rankings based on regional points, not national points, are a less expensive way for clubs and fencers to quantify their achievements. The Regional Recognition Program also provides high quality developmentally appropriate competitive opportunities while limiting travel and time costs for parents/coaches/athletes.

The ranking of clubs by the number of patches awarded to members is tabled below. Columbus Fencing and Fitness, based in Dublin, Ohio is the # 1 ranked club with 11 patch winners, awarded in all three weapons, all age groups and in both genders.  It is followed by Penta Olympic Fencing Club, based in Fairfax, Virginia with 10 patches. Club members in epee and foil were awarded patches in all age groups and both genders. Two clubs are tied for third place with nine patches each, PDX Fencing located in Beaverton, Oregon, a full-service saber club and Stoccata Fencing Academy & Club, a three-weapon club based in Longwood, Florida. Regional rankings are available by toggling the Region header. Clubs can be searched by using the search block at the top right corner of the table.

We have also prepared a listing of patch winners at the 2016-2017 RJCC which can be found here.

The ultimate way to honor your Regional Recognition Patch Winners is with an indoor 6′ x 2′ high vinyl banner with hem and grommets, fully inscribed with the names of Patch Winners, NFCR’s logo, and club name.
