Team USA met with mixed success at this year’s Cadet World Fencing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (4/1/ – 4/4/2017).  Despite silver medals by Christopher Walker (Men’s Saber), Ryan Griffiths (Men’s Epee) and bronze medals by Elizabeth Tartakovsky (Women’s Saber), Natalie Minarik (Women’s Foil) and Jonathan Piskovatskov (Men’s Epee), the Team’s overall performance fell significantly compared to the performance of Team USA over the past three years (2014-2016).

It was always going to be difficult to better the performance of last years Cadet Team which is ranked #1 among U.S. Cadet Teams over the past 20 years. Based on the individual performance of the 18 cadet members, the Team is ranked #7 compared to previous U.S. Cadet Teams over the past ten years (2008-2017) and #11 over the past 20 years (1998-2017) as illustrated in the table below.

Buoyed by the excellent performance of the U.S. Cadet Men’s Epee squad, the U.S. Cadet Men’s Team finished the Cadet Worlds ranked #2 compared to previous U.S. Cadet Men’s Teams over the past ten years and #4 over the past 20 years. Weighed down by the poor performance of this year’s Cadet Women’s Epee squad, the U.S. Cadet Women’s Team is ranked last (10th) compared to previous U.S. Cadet Women’s Teams over the past ten years and last (20th) compared to previous U.S. Cadet Women’s Teams over the past 20 years. It takes the wooden spoon award.

The U.S. Cadet Men’s Epee squad is the outstanding success story of this year’s Cadet Worlds. Its success has catapulted the squad into the #1 ranking compared to previous U.S. Cadet Men’s Epee squads over the past ten years and the #1 ranking compared to previous U.S. Cadet Men’s Epee squads over the past 20 years.

The major disappointment was the Cadet Women’s Epee squad which finished the Cadet Worlds without a Top 32 finish. This was the worse performance of a Cadet Women’s Epee squad since 1995 and is therefore ranked last (10th) among previous U.S. Cadet Women’s Epee squads over the past ten years and last (20th) compared to previous U.S. Cadet Women’s Epee squads over the past 20 years.

The rankings for the other U.S. Teams and squads are provided in the accompanying table.

  1. Steve de Vore says:

To give some perspective, it would be good to see the ages of team members this year and in previous years.

How many repeat performers have there been in previous years, of fencers who came back more mature and experienced, at the top of the age bracket, versus how many 15-year old first-timers.

The team this year looked pretty young to me.

  2. Ross says:

Steve, you make some excellent points. The age data is available from the FIE’s website. We are currently examining the correlation between the performance of fencers at the Cadet Worlds, Junior Worlds and Senior Worlds and plan to add age and experience (at Worlds) as factors in the analysis. Keep an eye out for a future post on age and experience as factors in the performance of cadets.
