New York fencing clubs are once again sending a large contingent of fencers to the Junior Olympics (JOs), which will be held in Kansas City, MO 17 -20 February 2017. The JOs will be held at the Kansas City Convention Center, Halls A-C during four days that will include twelve individual and six team competitions in all three weapons: epee, foil, and saber.

This year’s tournament is expected to attract 259 of the best cadet (U17) and junior (U20) fencers from 26 of the 60 USFA Member clubs in New York State. The fencers will participate in 395 individual events, which represents over 15% of the total individual events at the tournament. The JOs provide a final chance for many athletes to make the U.S. National Team that will compete at the 2017 Cadet and Junior World Championships in April in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Clubs sending the largest contingents from New York include Fencing Academy of Westchester, Manhattan Fencing Center and Fencers Club with 39, 38 and 33 fencers respectively as illustrated in the accompanying graph.

The contingent includes 14 of the 18 New York fencers ranked in the Top 8 of their respective age-gender-weapon categories with many poised for one of the individual titles.

The number of clubs and club registrants for each age-gender-weapon category is provided in the accompanying tables.  The data is derived from the Confirmed Entry List from USFAs website immediately after the Regular Entry period closed (10th January 2017). The data is provided to highlight the New York clubs that plan to participate in the JOs and the relative strength of their cadet and junior fencing programs.

Participants in the JOs have qualified to fence in the tournament by one of several methods, hence the strength of a club’s cadet/junior program can be gauged by the number of entrants. Of course, it is not the only way to gauge the strength of a club’s cadet/junior program, but it certainly provides some insight into a club’s commitment to these age groups.
